Why I Shoot Boudoir Photography | My “Why”

Why Boudoir Photography

Sometimes I find it hard to put into words why I shoot boudoir photography. To me, it is so much more than just some pretty photos. It’s about self acceptance, self love, body positivity and art. It’s about getting glammed up and laughing our butts off. It’s about the transformation that takes place between the time you walk in to the studio and walk back out the door. It’s about feeling beautiful, and that is something I believe EVERY person deserves!

I started boudoir photography because I love making women look and feel beautiful! It is such a joy to show women how beautiful they really are by showing them what I see through the camera. Women always tell me they can’t look or feel beautiful because they are too tall, heavy, old. LIES! I love showing them their photos from the shoot and how they are in fact… beautiful. Seeing women leave here with more pep in their step and also hearing about the confidence boost that happened and lasted… is why I do what I do!

It’s my job to mirror my clients. Not the mirror that the world shows you and shames you, but the one who sees past all the lumps, bruises, and stretch marks. The one that shows you how bright you CAN sparkle!

The Transformtion

The transformations that take place in the studio is the best part of the whole experience for us. When a woman arrives to the studio, most of the times she is nervous, sometimes even visibly nervous. Shaky hand and voices, sweaty hands and shoulders tight are things that we see all the time. As soon as they sit down and start getting glammed, they start to calm down. Once we start chatting about the session, what to expect and get to know each other better I see the nerves start to settle. Hair and makeup take about 1.5-2 hours so there is lots of chatting and getting to know each other!

Then the shoot will start. The first series is to get you all warmed up! When I show the back of the camera after the first series, I usually hear “OH MY GOSH, is that me?” As we go into the next series, and the next, the smiles and giggles usually start to come out. I show all the poses myself so women will know exactly what to do and how to do it. Once they are relaxed, they start feeling more confident and relaxed and the sexiness starts to come out.

By the time we finish the session nd go into the image reveal, we’re friends and have gotten to know each other. We just shared an experience that they will always remember. We’ve laughed, and shared stories about our lives.

Once I show them their images on my computer screen, their jaw drops. They see themselves like they never have beer. This is one of the amazing things about boudoir photography. I get a chance to show them how I (and their partner) see them! When they walk out the door, they are all smiles and can’t wait to share with their friends about the experience they just had.

A Little Piece Of My Story

I didn’t realize the gravity of what I was accomplishing with women until I experienced a shoot for myself. Growing up, I was always the “large” girl. I wasn’t necessarily fat, but I was bigger than most girls at my school. I developed early and had (still have!) hips for dayyyyyys. Growing up I was very into reading magazines like most other young girls and I developed a very toxic habit of comparing myself to others. As a perfectionist… this didn’t go too well for me. Fast forward to my early 20’s and I gave birth to two baby boys back to back. Gained 50 pounds… lost some and then started anti depressants and gained a whopping 75 pounds!!! Ugh, my confidence was slim to none. I stopped taking care of myself. Would early look nice and never wanted to wear makeup or leave the house. I stopped putting myself on the list.

Then, in my thirties I decided to put myself on the fucking list again… and I’d put myself down first a lot of days. I’ve had some success at getting some weight off, but that would never be done. I’d never be happy with my body. Well, something happen to my thinking and I decided to stop talking negatively to myself and only speak love and kindness… and I began to LOVE myself AND my body! I loved getting to plan my shoot. I loved feeling sexy and beautiful. I honestly couldn’t believe that was me and I felt so amazing and confident ever since! My body does a lot for me and I am going to thank it and be good to it… even celebrate it! Life is short and I’m not going to spend one more day unhappy!!!!

Boudoir photography is a celebration of your body and who you truly are. I take a lot of pride in being able to help show other women how to celebrate their bodies, their battles and their victories on all they have been through. For some, this is an extremely transformational experience. Let me help remind you to love yourself and put yourself first on the damn list!
